Facility Construction
TMWRF had two major construction projects completed during the last year.
These projects included constructing two nitrification towers, modification of piping on
the digester gas lines, additions of recycle piping to four denitrification units,
installation of selector walls in four aeration tanks, and the addition of a third
methanol storage tank. The additions and modifications have had a positive impact
on the wastewater facility treatment processes. The modifications have facilitated
better control of foam in aeration tanks and improved gas handling capabilities in the
digesters. In addition the aeration tank selectors have shown to perform in such a
way that allows the facility to shutdown four phostrip tanks during warm weather.
Facility Operations
Major construction like the projects discussed above can have a severe impact on
plant operations. Operations staff was faced with a variety of facility problems making
compliance an even greater challenge. To date, the facility has not violated its
NDEP discharge permit for 18 months. The last violation was the result of an NDEP
approved a facility shutdown of the nitrification/ denitrification process equipment. The
facility was inspected by NDEP during December 2001 and received very favorable comments
in the State audit.
Operations staff performed facility research during the last year which resulted in
several articles being published in the Water Environment Federation Journals
and these articles will be presented at the WEF national conferences. Additionally,
TMWRF staff members were awarded several national awards for past research on snails
and wastewater industry service awards.
