TMWRF has made several accomplishments in the area of occupational safety and health.
Confined Space TMWRF has a group of seven employees trained in the field of confined space rescue. A trailer has been outfitted with the necessary equipment to perform safe confined space entries and rescues. The facility has also implemented the Confined Space Tracker software program. This software lists each space; the procedures for safe entry, hazards associated with the space and has the ability to create a permit for the specific space.
Lock-out Tag-out TMWRF staff has developed its own LOTO computerized program which lists specific procedures for each piece of equipment/machinery. Staff accomplished a complete inventory of all LOTO procedures. This information is now included in the new Maintenance Work Order and Preventative Maintenance program developed in-house by TMWRF Systems Analysts.
Medical First Responder TMWRF has completed training for 12 employees who are now certified through the State of Nevada as First Responders. They had to complete 56 hours of training in the field of medical emergencies. The facility now has 2 locations that store specialized equipment to be used in the event of a medical emergency.
Chemical Safety Various projects to improve safety with workplace chemicals have been completed or are in the process of being completed. Items such as installing back draft dampeners in the chlorine building, the purchase of hand held chlorine sensors, the purchase of hand held sodium bisulfite sensors, improvements in chlorine room security, and the removal of a 30,000 gallon propane tank are just some of the projects undertaken.
Contractor Safety TMWRF is currently working with the City Public Information Officer to create a contractor safety video specific to the needs of the wastewater treatment facility. The video will be used with a recently developed Contractor Field Handbook to help train all contractors who provide services to TMWRF.
Many other safety programs at TMWRF include the safety policy/program review, CPR and First Aid training, respiratory protection training, responding to chemical release training, and tracking of all employee safety training.
As of July 1, 2002 facility departments have worked the following amount of days without a lost time accident:
